It seems that Microsoft quickly answered the CNIL’s request, stating that it is happy to work with the commission on an acceptable solution. Ultimately, though, Microsoft hasn’t denied that it collects a large amount of information from Windows 10 users, something that could prompt Windows 10 users to downgrade to an older version of Windows. However, Microsoft said that it has some concerns about transferring data between Europe and the US, referencing the lack of a Safe Harbor agreement. David Heiner, vice president and deputy general counsel at Microsoft, said the company has built strong privacy protections into Windows 10 and that it will collaborate closely with the CNIL in the next few months in order to understand what the agency’s concerns are and to figure out an acceptable solution. Microsoft will most likely release an updated privacy statement sometime next month where it will most likely communicate its intention to adopt Privacy Shield. For now, the company is trying to meet all the requirements of Privacy Shield first. It seems that more and more people are now wondering what’s going on with Windows 10 and what kind of “excessive information” it sucks from its users. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 owners have the chance to upgrade to Windows 10 (until July 29, 2016), but for some reason most of them haven’t done so that until now. This is the reason why Microsoft has been “forcing” users to upgrade to its last Windows OS.
