Mr. Nadella spoke at an April Conference Call in which he provided further details for Microsoft’s fiscal year. During that conference, he stated: As such, Microsoft is still investing in mobile devices despite the demise of Windows Phone. However, the above quote might be a little ambiguous. For Microsoft, mobile devices are various things such as phones, tablets, ARM devices or laptops. The April Conference Call was not about mobile devices. It was actually a conference about the company’s fiscal year. There Microsoft announced that its third quarter revenue had increased by 16%. Yet, Mr. Nadella’s confirmation that Microsoft is still investing in mobile devices will no doubt further stir the Surface Phone rumor mill. The fabled Surface Phone is speculated to be a foldable Windows 10 mobile device, as shown in the concept art below. It is also anticipated that the Surface Phone will be based on the Windows Core OS (Andromeda OS) the company is developing. Windows Core OS will supposedly be a new Windows 10 version compatible on any form factor device.
Furthermore, Redstone 5 preview builds have also revived Surface Phone rumors. An April Windows 10 Insider Preview for Redstone 5 includes phone APIs. With phone APIs returning to Windows 10, it seems all the more probable that Microsoft is cooking up a new Win 10 mobile device. So perhaps there might still be a Surface Phone, or alternative new Windows 10 mobile device, after all! Yet, Microsoft has confirmed nothing about a Surface Phone. However, Microsoft might reveal more about an upcoming mobile device at its Build 2018 developer conference.
