The two partners plan to work on improving content streaming and cloud gaming with the help of Microsoft Azure.  Both companies also intend to develop “new intelligent image sensor solutions” using Microsoft’s AI technology and Sony’s hardware. An official press release from Microsoft states:

Still competitors on the console market

Microsoft and Sony are the two biggest competitors in the console markets. We can see that Xbox One and PS4 are giving tough competition to each other. However, we can’t really say that both of them intend to end their console wars. The partnership can be beneficial for both these companies. They intend to target the same type of customers living in the same geographic regions. The gaming community is looking forward to the partnership because it can enhance online gaming support. Furthermore, this partnership may allow cross-platform gaming between the two popular consoles — i.e PS5 and Xbox. The gaming community is excited to enjoy titles offered exclusively on both platforms. Previously, Sony was reluctant to share its ecosystem and refused to enable cross-play.  Microsoft and Sony have not shared other details regarding their future plans. We will have to wait until both companies reveal some highlights of this partnership. However, it is interesting to see how both companies collaborate with each other.
